History of Springboro, Middletown, and Miamisburg:

Springboro, Middletown, and Miamisburg are three historic cities in southwestern Ohio, each with a distinctive background that has contributed to the region’s development.

Springboro, established in 1815 by Jonathan Wright, a Quaker, originally earned its name from the numerous underground springs in the area. The city holds a notable place in history for its significant involvement in the Underground Railroad, boasting more safe houses for runaway slaves than any other Ohio community. The town’s early character was deeply influenced by its Quaker heritage, which was evident in its conservative approach, such as implementing a ten-year ban on liquor sales for early settlers.

Middletown, founded in 1802, transformed from a small frontier settlement into an important industrial center. Initially driven by agriculture and trade, the city’s growth accelerated with the construction of the Miami and Erie Canal in the mid-19th century, which established it as a crucial transportation hub. The city played a pivotal role in the industrial revolution, particularly in steel and paper production, and demonstrated resilience by adapting to economic challenges, including the Great Depression.

Miamisburg, which celebrated its bicentennial in 2018, traces its roots to 1797 when Zachariah Hole settled in the area and constructed a stockade. Officially founded on February 20, 1818, by four Pennsylvanians who auctioned 90 lots, the city took its name from the Miami Native American tribe that originally inhabited the region. A significant historical landmark is the Miamisburg Mound, the largest conical burial mound east of the Mississippi River, which served as a burial site for the Adena tribe.

These three cities share a common thread in their development: their proximity to the Great Miami River and the Miami-Erie Canal, which were instrumental in their early economic growth. Today, they continue to preserve their rich historical legacies while embracing modern challenges and opportunities.

When we first moved in (rented in my dad’s name as we came from across the country), it was very run down with the units dirty and filled with hornets nests and old doors. They have been renovating. It has a new paint job and new doors so it looks better. Wish the units inside were better taken care of before moving in. The one ceiling looks like it could fall in at any time. It rained hard recently and everything was still safe so we shall see how it goes. I do appreciate the effort they are putting in to make it nicer.
