History of Portage:

Originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Ho-Chunk and Menominee tribes, the area served as a vital trading and transportation hub long before European settlers arrived. European exploration and fur trade in the 17th and 18th centuries brought French traders and missionaries to the region. Portage’s name derives from the French word “portage,” meaning to carry a canoe or boat overland between waterways, reflecting its importance as a portage site connecting the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed. The Fox-Wisconsin Waterway, which connected Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River via the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, became a crucial trade route, facilitating the exchange of goods and ideas between Native American tribes and European settlers. In the 19th century, Portage played a pivotal role in the westward expansion of the United States and the development of the Midwest. The completion of the Erie Canal and the opening of the Great Lakes to navigation spurred economic growth and migration to the region. Portage emerged as a thriving river town, with steamboats and barges transporting passengers, goods, and agricultural produce along the waterway. The city became a center of commerce, industry, and culture, attracting settlers from diverse backgrounds. The arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century further transformed Portage, enhancing its connectivity, and facilitating the movement of people and goods across the country. The city became a major railway junction, with several railroad lines converging in Portage, including the Chicago and North Western Railway and the Milwaukee Road. The railroad brought prosperity and development to Portage, fueling the growth of manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism in the region. Today, Portage honors its rich history through its historic downtown district, which features well-preserved 19th-century buildings, museums, and cultural landmarks. The Historic Indian Agency House, built in 1832, offers insights into the area’s early settlement and fur trade history. I can only give them 3 stars because of the price. Just this year alone, my bill has been raised 3 times. They are great units to rent but the price is way to high plus they are creating a monopoly on storage units. They buy up every one around and the price keeps going up. A new 10x24ft is $145/month. That’s insane especially since they bought out every storage facility around. They’re nice but way over priced.
